I completed my first 5K race this morning! It’s been the culmination of 5 months of training. It was GREAT. My goal was to complete it. I wanted to finish. A secondary, less important goal, was to run the whole time…no walking. I am very proud to announce that I did BOTH! My finish time was 34:33. I am really happy. It felt great.
I was quite worried because my last run before the race was possibly my worst run ever. It was very hot and humid that day, and I made the mistake of running at around 4:30pm…just at the apex of the heat. My right leg, specifically my calf and the upper part of my ankle bothered me so much that I stopped running twice, and I actually walked the last bit home. I was worried. Having that happen two days before my first race was off-putting, for sure. All fears, however, were unfounded.
At the race I ran into some good friends (including Andy M of True Spies fame, Nathan, Ryan and the chairman of my football club Drew!), which made the experience a good one. My lovely Missus was there and cheered me on at both the start AND the finish! She’s brilliant. Not stopping (even though many around me stopped, or slowed to a walk, then passed me later!) was a big deal for me. No leg discomfort this time, so I chalk my experience the other day up to fatigue and heat.
I see now why people get the running bug. The atmosphere, the adrenalin, everything was great. I’m in. I don’t know what the future holds for me in terms of other races, but I do know that I set a goal to do this 5 months ago and I did it. That feels good.
I’d like to thank everyone who has been so supportive and amazing while I was doing this. You’re all glorious. I love yinz guys.
